Singkawang has a
distinct oriental atmosphere with hundreds of Chinese temples found around
almost every corner of town. One of the oldest
temples here is the Tri Dharma Bumi Raya temple, established in 1878 dedicated
to the god of forest, Tua Peh Kong. The city will come alive in Chinese New
Year and reaching its climax in Cap Goh Meh.
All Chinese people, not only from around the region, but also from Java
and Sumatra and even Singapore or Malaysia gather in this place to celebrate
the event with families and friends.Singkawang also famous
with its Chinese Ceramics still produced in the old style with ‘antique’
designs. The center of ceramics is at Sa Kok, some 7 km from Singkawang.
