Pulau Kaget Nature Reserve, South Kalimantan

It is a home for Proboscis Monkey, a unique long nose monkey. Pulau Kaget Nature Reserve is located near the estuary of Barito River, which flows through the city of Banjarmasin. This island is a delta island formed by sediment of mud which grew from the river bed. Due to its fertile soil, the island creating a dense forest which became the habitat of various wildlife. 

The unique Proboscis Monkey is obviously the star of this reserve. Locally it called Bekantan, this shy creature is an endemic species which can only be found in Borneo and is known as one of the largest monkey species native to Asia. 

Aside from Proboscis Monkey, the nature reserve is also home to the long tailed macaque, lutung apes and various species of birds including: the Parakeet, the Brahminy Kite, the Kingfisher, the Sea Eagle and many others.

Getting There
The island is not so far away from Banjarmasin the capital of South Kalimantan. Pulau Kaget can be reached in 15 minutes by speed boat. If you wish to try Kalimantan traditional river boat, Klotok, the trip will take one and a half hour.
