As stunningly
beautiful above water as it is below, Raja Ampat (which literally translated as
the Four Kings) has a startling diversity of habitats to explore. Located off
the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula on the island of Papua, is an
archipelago comprising 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals surrounding the
four major islands found here are Waigeo, Misool (home to ancient rock
paintings), Salawati, and Batanta. The
underwater offers the world’s best marine sights. Here, divers can explore
vertical underwater walls. The thrill of drift diving is another great
challenge.
Activity
All water activities
are possible to do in this island, such as wreck diving, sailing, kayaking,
etc. Other activity will also interesting such as make your own sculpture
guided by Asmat artisan, fishing using Papuan techniques, or trekking to find
waterfalls.
For diving enthusiast
the favorite destination is usually in South Waigeo. Visit Kabui Bay with many
karsts islands, goa tengkorak (skull cave) and the historical sites of Raja
Ampat in Kali Raja. You can see a variety of birds in Yenwaupnor and Sawinggrai
village, the Salay dance in Saonek, and plaited handicrafts in Arborek. In
addition, there is a traditional village where you can walk around and enjoy
the unique slow paced atmosphere.
Getting There
Sorong is 6 hours fly
from Jakarta or you can start from Bali. There are daily ferries available
between Sorong and Waisai, capital of Raja Ampat district on the island of
Waigeo. The journey takes between 1.5 or 2 hours. There are also speed boats to
rent in Sorong.
