CLIMATE
During day time it can be very hot, so wear sunblock or hat to protect
your skin. Drinking plenty of water will prevent you from dehydration.
The weather in Jakarta nowadays is quite unpredictable. A heavy rain
might suddenly fall during a shiny day. Preparing a jacket and small
umbrella would be a wise decision.
LANGUAGE
English is widely spoken among business people and hotel staffs. When
bargaining in the market, however, it is recommended to take an
Indonesian friend with you or learn a few basic words of Bahasa
Indoensia to help you having simple conversation since not all sellers
can speak English well.
PAYMENT, TIPS AND MONEY
Please pay attention when you go to the restaurant. taxes and service
charge are sometimes not stated in the menu, so always include 21% when
you calculate the price of food you order. Money changers are available
in shopping malls and touris areas but the bank usually offer better
rates. Most money changers will not accept dirty or crumpled paper
money. Even if they do, the exchange rates will drop significantly. Tips
ranging from IDR 5000 for porters and cabbies to IDR 20,000 for good
hairdresser are appreciated.
CREDIT CARD
Credit card are widely accepted at hotels and shopping centers. Most of ATM machines accept Visa, Mastercard and Cirrus.
DRIVING TIPS
Rental cars are available anywhere but it's better to use the service
provided by your hotel. If you drive, make sure that you drive on the
left side of the road. Don't forget to fasten your seat belt and pay
attention to 3 in 1 regulation at the main road. If you will get taxi,
pay attention on driver's ID and if you will take public transportation
you need to be extra careful with your valuable items.
COMMUNICATION
Direct international calls can be made in hotel rooms. Most hotels have
internet broadband access, furthermore some cafes provide internet
service. To make your mobile phone calls more convenient and affordable,
you can switch your provider to local provider without having to change
your number.
BUSINESS HOURS
Government offices are open from 8am to 5pm from Mon-Fri. There's midday
break every Fri for Moslem's Friday prayer. Normal banking houts are
from 8am to 3pm. Bank is closed in weekend.
VISA
Tourists and business visitors may obtain a 60-days ahort-visit pass
(visa) upon arrival. All visitors passport must have a validity of at
least 6 months and they must produce a round trip or onward ticket. A
sic month to one-year temporary residence visa may be obtained from the
Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia for either single or multiple
entries.
CUSTOMS
Avoid giving and receiving things with the left hand. Don't raise your
voice or point a finger to someone. Take off your shoes when entering
someone's house or religious site.
