Sulawesi at Glance...

Sulawesi is the 4th biggest island in Indonesia after Papua, Kalimantan and Sumatera. It is about 174,600 square km which makes it the 11th biggest in the world. It is also known as Celebes, a name for Sulawesi which was used by the Portuguese. The very famous tribe in Sulawesi is the Bugis tribe. They can be found in all parts of Sulawesi, perhaps in all parts of the world. The majority of Bugis are traders; they sail around the world to trade, they are known for their Phinisi ship. 

The Toraja tribe is also one of the most famous tribes in Sulawesi, the native people of Sulawesi Island who live in the south. The Toraja tribe has beautiful architecture, diversity and unique culture. Their funeral ceremony has caught tourists’ attention for many years. This ritual is very important in the life of Toraja people, because they believe that for those who die without any appropriate funeral ceremony, the soul of the dead will bring disaster to the remaining relatives.
